Sustainable development

Wellbeing of future generations act (Wales) 2015

This is what we already do

"At Anglesey Bees we produce the best tasting honey and deliver the most informative beekeeping courses and experiences with the greatest respect for the environment and the highest regard for our social value."

We already align with the seven goals of the wellbeing of future generations (Wales) act 2015.

a prosperous Wales

A PROSPEROUS WALES

Our business relies on low overheads to generate wealth and employment. Honey production is a non-extractive sustainable process and does not rely on extracting finite resources from the environment. It contributes to a well-educated and skilled population with a deep understanding of the creation and sustainable management of a diverse habitat to favour pollinators.

a resilient Wales

A RESILIENT  WALES

Beekeeping relies on the custodianship of a biodiverse natural habitat and a healthy functioning ecosystem. At Anglesey Bees we are managing our land accordingly and with the Woodland Trust we have planted and are managing a new bee friendly woodland to enrich the habitat and to offset our carbon emissions. Furthermore during our events we are educating the public how to enhance and maintain a biodiverse habitat to benefit pollinators.

a healthier Wales

A HEALTHIER WALES

beekeeping or just a passing interest in bees and pollinators is a physical activity in the outdoors, immersed in nature and demands a lot of planning and thinking on your feet at times. It therefore contributes towards a lifestyle that promotes both physical and mental wellbeing.

a more equal Wales

A MORE EQUAL WALES

We believe that everyone can do their bit to help pollinators. By making our events more inclusive and accessible, we aim to empower more people to make a difference to enhancing a biodiverse natural environment regardless of their background or circumstances. We champion the cause of the charity Prime Cymru in promoting the engagement of economically inactive older people and have made several TV interviews on how we have benefited from mentoring from Prime Cymru.

a globally responsible Wales

A GLOBALLY RESPONSIBLE WALES

Anglesey Bees operates in a circular economy to the best of our ability. Rather than construct new premises for our business, we have adapted an existing building and largely used low carbon sustainable timber in the construction.

Furthermore all of our marketing and transactions are conducted on-line to minimise paper waste. Honey harvesting is a sustainable and non-extractive process, not reliant on extracting finite resources from the environment. Moreover, it produces neither waste nor surplus. Our honey is only retailed in recyclable glass jars and cardboard packaging and we rely on short, local supply chains, including local artisan markets, to reduce food miles and our carbon footprint. We enhance a biodiverse natural habitat at Anglesey Bees by planting and managing a bee-friendly woodland and use conservation grazing to minimise the use of machinery for maintenance. We contribute to sustainable tourism by providing on-site accommodation in an off-grid shepherd's hut, provide events that participants incorporate into longer holidays locally and work with others to provide tourism extenders.

a Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language

A WALES OF VIBRANT CULTURE AND THRIVING WELSH LANGUAGE

At our events, we communicate a sense of Welshness, not just in the use of the Welsh language in correspondence and marketing and delivery of events, but also through the landscape that participants immerse into on our events and the link to that landscape and it's unique geology that they take away with them when they buy our honey. We contribute to local supply chains and develop links with small local retail outlets and innovative automated vending units. We promote events with local appeal e.g. our National Garden Scheme open garden and with community ownership and volunteer support. e.g. our local Gwyl Mabsant festival. We support fundraising events for Welsh cultural events such as Eisteddfod Môn. Furthermore, We have also welcomed opportunities to champion the cause of pollinators with interviews on Radio Cymru's "Bore Cothi" chat show and S4C’s “Heno” magazine programme.

a Wales of cohesive communities

A WALES OF COHESIVE COMMUNITIES

Our events, honey production and environmental custodianship champion our cultural heritage and contribute to a healthy ecosystem and biological diversity. Our events along with articles published in papur bro, beekeeping talks delivered to community organisations such as the WI, Rotary club and regional beekeeping associations and involvement in S4C's staycation tv series "Gwyliau Gartre" and magazine programme, “Heno”, promote a healthy lifestyle and development of valuable skills and knowledge in the community. They encourage a feeling of engagement, mental and physical wellbeing and sense of community and encourage opportunities for volunteering, local involvement and an opportunity to use the Welsh language naturally every day.

Our plan for the future

Sustainable development is an integral part our future plans as shown by our green growth pledge.

Sustainable development goal Target Plan
Environmental goal Our business exceeds net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Calculate carbon footprint and woodland sequestration. Work towards installing solar pv and battery storage to export green energy.
Social goal Products and services are more inclusive and accessible. Provide affordable experiences to address the cost of living crisis and work with strategically located local businesses and charities to become accessible outlets for our honey.
Economic goal Business growth and resilience. Work on new honey-based product development and explore niche markets for our experiences.
